The Canonical URL is the authoritative page for all identical pages with different URL’s on your site.
Many website owners use content management systems to control the content on their websites.
But, be aware that wrongly configured content management systems (CMS) can cause some pages on your website to get indexed under multiple URL’s.
This can cause duplicate content issues with the search engines and with external link inventories.
Typically Search Engines like Google will pick the page it feels has the highest authority on your site. But they might sometimes choose the wrong URL to be the authoritative one, making it a nightmare for the correct Search Engine Optimization of your site.
