Be on First Fold!
95% of all clicks are on page 1 of the SERP’s
Surveys show that 95% of all clicks by users happen on Page 1 of the search engine result pages (SERP’s).
This particular survey mentioned was conducted over a period of 9 months with almost 9 million search queries. Surveyed were only clicks on the first 3 pages of the SERP’s on the 3 largest search engines for non-branded search queries: Google, Yahoo and Bing. Please note that the click ratio was almost identical on all 3 search engines. (non-branded search queries means: the search does not include the brand name or product name of the company in question)
Below are the results of the survey:
- ~ 8.5 million clicks happened on page 1 across all three engines
- ~ 232,000 clicks were done on page 2
- ~ 180,000 clicks were done on page 3
Looking at those numbers, can you see the importance of your web page being listed on the first page of the SERP’s?
But it is by far not enough to be listed on the first page of the search engine results. Take a look at the table below and see the click distribution on the first page of the search results!
~ 56% of ALL clicks on the first page go to result number 1!
~ 13% of ALL clicks on the first page go to result number 2!
~ 10% of ALL clicks on the first page go to result number 3!
- notice the huge drop in clicks from page 3 to page 4!
Only 4% click on result number 4 with decreasing numbers as we go down the list to result number 10.
Did you have any idea that these were the click ratios on the search engines?
Probably not. Most “SEO Experts” don’t even know these numbers!
